Building strong relationships with your clients is one of the cornerstones of business success. Therefore, you must develop the skills required to establish and maintain these relationships. Unlike other skills that one can develop and retain for life, such as riding a bike, these skills need constant practice to reinforce and maintain relationships.

Communication

Communication is critical in building strong relationships. Ensure your clients can quickly reach you in multiple ways, such as via email, telephone, and even social media, depending on your business model. Reply whenever they reach out to you and if you cannot do it immediately, get back to them as soon as possible. Communicating often with your client helps ensure that you are on the same page. Always seek to improve your communication skills.

Getting to know your clients is vital in building strong relationships.

Get to know your clients. Learn about their business and the industry. This will help you get a better idea of the issues they face and offer solutions tailored to fit their problem. Knowing their business shows that you care enough to do your research and demonstrates professionalism. Also, get to know your client as an individual. For example, if they have children, ask about them during your conversations. Learn about their life. Your client is a human, too, and you should be able to relate to them as a person as well. However, keep it professional and stick to safe topics.

Exceed your clients’ expectations

Exceed their expectations. Do not oversell yourself while attempting to win a client. Instead, give them a realistic picture of what they should expect from you. Once you have done this, go the extra mile. You could go all out and completely blow their mind, or you could do something small on top of the high quality work you have already done. Either way, this is a great way to get your clients to see your value, and they will appreciate you for it.

Maintaining a positive attitude is essential in building strong relationships.

Maintain a positive attitude. Negativity can quickly destroy relationships with your clients. If you’re the sort of person that can brighten up your client’s day just from your interactions, your client will come to value your relationship. Even when handling issues, communicate positively. Show them that you are on their side and want to sort out the case in the best way possible. It is you and them versus the problem, not you versus them. Always treat them with the utmost respect. Positivity is vital in building strong relationships with clients and other stakeholders.

Value your clients’ time.

Time is probably the most crucial resource we humans have, and it is non-renewable. If you are attending a meeting with a client, arrive on time. Better yet, come a few minutes before. This shows that you respect their time. Reply to them promptly whenever they send emails. This shows them that you appreciate their time. Valuing your clients’ time is critical in building strong relationships in business.

If you would like to learn more about building strong relationships in business, I would highly recommend the book ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie. I assure you that you will find a wealth of knowledge inside, which will help you.
