After running the same business for the last 10 years, I have come to appreciate that every time I aimed to increase my revenue, I had to focus on personal growth to prepare myself for the next level of income.
In my first year of operating a home business, I made Ksh 500,000, which was a significant milestone for me. Most of that income went back into growing the business. In the second year, I quickly doubled my turnover to 1 million while still working from home. Again, a substantial portion of the earnings was reinvested into business growth.
By the third year, I moved into a shared office space and achieved my target of doubling my income once more. At this point, I began experiencing the challenges that come with growth, such as staff wages, rent, airtime, travel, and other overhead expenses.
However, in the fourth year, I hit a plateau, and for three years, my revenue remained stagnant. I found myself making excuses instead of taking action. It wasn’t until I dedicated time to work on the business, addressing internal issues, implementing processes, attending short courses, and improving our website that I started to see some positive changes. But still, growth was limited.
Joining a networking group proved to be a turning point. Interacting with other entrepreneurs, listening to their experiences, and observing their strategies helped me identify gaps within myself that I had overlooked. Addressing these gaps and focusing on personal development once again led to business growth.
Two years later, I encountered another plateau. This time, I had become wiser. I realized that I didn’t need others to point out my shortcomings. This made me realize and understand that continuous learning, expanding my network, and exploring new opportunities were crucial for personal growth and business growth. I embraced the mindset of always seeking knowledge and approaching life as an exciting adventure, where I prioritize personal growth, followed by the growth of those around me and my business.
